Marilyn

Remember that we decided that we should not only abide by norms (speak one at a time, stay on topic) but that we should also offer "good thoughts" (important, appropriate, well-reasoned). By the beginning of tomorrow's class, please post regarding the process of discussion and/or good ideas and strong points. You may reference the "fish bowl" portion of class or the after-band-and-cheerleaders left discussion. 50-60 words.

  1. Well we came up that they where trying to use Marilyn Monroe as an example that she likes to attract the guys to her. She is not trying to show to much skin off. The picture was in action when it was taken. The Swahili woman she looks like she is rich in her culture it might be a passed down dress never know.

  2. The people in the "fish bowl" pointed out some really good points that both pictures represent beauty and that they both show skin. However, when Bailey said that the Marilyn Monroe picture looked like it was taken in action and something that was in a newspaper I disagree with because Marilyn looks like she is clearly posing for the picture and is wanting guys attention. The Swahili woman does look like she is rich, but the dress is cultural and I would think it is passed down by families possibly, so she might not be that rich.

    1. I enjoyed the way we discussed the Marilyn Monroe and Swahili woman picture. I really gained a lot from the fishbowl activity. During the discussions I agreed with many points made by my classmates. I think that both the pictures are beautiful, and they advertise beauty just in a different way. Marilyn’s beauty is seductive and tease-like. It focuses more on the beauty of her body and not her true beauty. The Swahili woman shows the natural and modest side to a beautiful woman. I disagreed with the thought that because of the Swahili woman’s dress she may be rich. I think that is just how they dressed in their culture, and it does not mean she is rich, but that she is the image of beauty from their culture, in the clothes and dressings that their culture wear.

  3. I liked some of the things the people in the fish bowl were saying. I think it was Ashley who pointed out a very good thought, she stated that both the pictures were showing some skin but not showing too much. This may be because Marilyn Monroe, as a sex icon was known for her seductive and suggestive way of dressing and looking. The Swahili woman could have shown a bit skin because that may have been appropriate for her culture. I disagreed with Chase when he said that the Swahili woman was not beautiful. I believe beauty comes in many different forms, the Swahili woman showed it in a more traditional way. From her background, it looked like there were books and a portrait. Maybe in her culture, beauty is based on intelligence and personality. Marilyn went with a more provocative look and the Swahili woman went with a traditional beauty.

  4. During the "fish bowl" discussion I received some valuable information on the pictures of Marilyn Monroe and the Swahili woman. I agreed with Ashley Yarbrough when she said that Marilyn shows skin but not a lot. Someone else also brought up that the Swahili woman showed her natural beauty. I agree with this because the Swahili woman did not wear make up and showed little skin unlike Marilyn.

  5. I enjoyed the "fish bowl" discussion today. I agreed with Ashley when she talked about the Swahili woman. She said that the Swahili picture was placed beside the Marilyn picture to show that you do not have to take most of your clothes off too be beautiful; I agree with that because I too noticed how the pictures showed beauty in two totally different ways. Marilyn picture was of her with her hair fixed, makeup done, and her skirt up, which caught the readers attention. The Swahili woman picture showed beauty in a completely different way. She was dressed in elegant clothing and jewelry with no makeup and was still beautiful. Ashley brought up a good point when she said the two pictures showed beauty in two different ways.

  6. I think that the "fish bowl" discussion today was very beneficial towards everybody. I agreed with bailey, china, and luke with most of the things they said they all made very good points and reasoning. But chase on the other hand.... I disagreed when he said that the Swahili woman was not pretty in fact "ugly" as he stated. Every woman is beautiful in her own way and I thought that for Marilyn wearing make up and her hair all fixed up was herself showing beauty, but the Swahili woman was showing beauty in her own way but not wearing anything on her face and nice clothes. I think everyone but chase brought up good points. No offense chase.

  7. I felt the "fishbowl" was a great way to the discuss the pictures of Marilyn Monroe and the Swahili woman. I totally agree with the point of both women being beautiful, just in different ways. Marilyn is trying to tease the guys, whereas the Swahili woman is very modest. I disagreed with Chase when he said the Swahili woman was not pretty; because true beauty is natural beauty. I agree with Ashley when she talked about how the pictures were placed beside one another because it shows you don't have to portray to be "sexy" to be beautiful.

  8. The "fish bowl" discussion went very well in my opinion. We talked about our different opinions on a picture of Marilyn Monroe, and an unnamed Swahili woman. The picture of Marilyn Monroe showed the suductive side of women because her skirt was up and she was dolled up from head to toe with her makeup, jewelry, and her clothing. The picture of the Swahili woman shows the more modest type woman, maybe because that is how her culture views that a lady should dress, in a modest attire. When I saw the picture of her, it seemed to me like the photographer was trying to portray a sense of natural and inner beauty combined in one.

  9. In my opinion, the "fish bowl" discussion went well. Even though I wanted to scream out my own opinion, I believe the people that were inside of the circle had very good opinions. Everyone really had different opinions about Marilyn Monroe and the unnamed Swahili woman. Even though the photo of Marilyn Monroe was not planned, I still view the picture as too provocative. I believe that the Swahili woman was very conserved.

  10. I enjoyed the discussion on the Marilyn Monroe and Swahili pictures. I really learned how to respect other peoples opinion from the fishbowl activity. During the discussions I agreed with most points made, except for Chase's comment because both women were beautiful but just in different ways. Marilyn was sexy and sensual which made her beautiful, and the Swahili woman was conservative and simple which made her beautiful. Their different perceptions of beauty came from their different cultures.

  11. We discuses how different people view beauty. Marilyn was being more provocative and sugestive. The Swahili woman was more reserved and was in a calm setting. They both, however, display a prosona of wealth and class. Marilyn was aimed more towards typical American men. The photo of the Swahili woman is meant to appeal to more traditional people. Both women are beautiful in different was.
